My employer will cover my moving expenses with receipts. How to ask for reimbursement?

Hello. My employeer (college) will reimburse my moving expenses up to 2,500. I would like to save money, so instead of hiring a company to pack and to load my things, I can do it myself. Will I be able to claim the money if I will not hire a company, but will move out myself? I can provide them with estimates from other moving companies. I do not want to look cheap, but earning 2,500 would be fantastic. Thank you for your replies.

  1. Most likely the company will only reimburse you for what you actually spent on moving costs - which is why they want the receipts.

When my hubby and I moved, his company reimbursed him for moving expenses. We did most of it ourselves, and were reimbursed for the gas (we provided them with gas receipts.) We were also reimbursed for the moving truck expenses that we incurred.

So, yeah, you can do it either way, but they’ll only pay for what you actually spend on moving. If you claim money you did not spend, you could be found out and possibly lose this job.
