Moving to new apartment. How can I make my cat most comfortable?
Jonela
My cat has been in my current apartment since I got her, she’s 1 years old but within a few weeks I’m moving to a new apartment. I have read that cats try to run away and get upset with a move, how can I make her most comfortable in the new place? The apartment is also double the size, should I limit her to one room at a time at first? How do I handle such a situation - help!

Put butter on her feet. That will keep her from going back to the old place. Give her time to adjust to the new surroundings. She might like it even better.
Castration is always an option.
Well when I first brought my cat into my new apartment, I took her straight to the bedroom where the bed was set up and of course she wanted to hide under it. I think that’s most cat’s comfort zone. I went on doing what I was doing, watching TV, relaxing after the unpacking, etc. When she felt comfortable she came out on her own, and I tried not to bother her or try and pick her up, because she’d get more scared. Once she’s done sniffing she was good. Now if we re-arrange furniture it’s sooo funny. She’ll walk really close to the ground like shes trying to crawl and sneak by and she’ll go inspect every inch of EVERYTHING. It only took her a day[not even maybe a couple hours] to adjust. Just make sure you bring your kitty in when everything is already set up. Remember cats usually hate change, so you can’t really do anything about it, and they do things to please themselves not us! Good luck with your baby!
find something she really likes and keep it in the apartment maybe a really cool toy or some tasty treats show her affection too i just moved too but my cat leaves the house, he is doing just fine and has other friends outside too
make sure to keep all the doors and windows locked…have some stuff in the apartment with her scent on them before she gets there…like does she have toys or a couple of kitty beds she lays on alot that you could put around the apartment before she gets there? she needs to know that this is her home so bring her old litter box and food dish and show those to her first thing…some people try to lock the cat in one room at first but I feel unless you have a multi story house this isn’t so neccessary…make sure not to change her brand litter or type of food for at least a few months if can avoid it…she needs a space that is hers—some cats have window perches or a corner with a rug and few toys or a cat tower/scratching post; basically any place a cat can go to escape from humans is great (it helps to keep their food in that area)…keep your regular daily routine and try to make her comfortable…if you can have all the furniture arranged and all the stuff unpacked before she moves in with you to avoid putting her through all that chaos (just leave her at a friends house for a day and spend that day moving and unpacking-if you drop her off early you might be able to pick her up before the night is over as long as you have people helping you move)
I’m going through this right now…my cat is 9 months old and he has lived in a house with a family since I got him as a 7 week old kitten; next month he and I will be leaving the house alone to move into a studio apartment that is large yet different than he is used to and these answers are what I’ve gotten out of my readings and my talking to friends and family who’ve been there before
Yeah, cats do have a tendancy to try and return to their previous home (run away), but as long as you put the kitty in a bedroom by herself in the new place, give her something with your smell on it (yee shirt you havent laundered yet, etc) and a radio or tv going so she doesnt hear all the commotion and come into the room with her every half hour or so to comfort and talk to her, she’ll do fine. After you’re settled in and things are calm, let her out to explore while you’re watching tv or relaxing. If she goes to a window or door and cries, make sure to put her back into that room before you go to bed. Good luck.
