How to make moving easier for my older cat?

moving

I am moving to an apartment next month with my 16 year old cat. Does anyone have advice on how to make the move as stress-free as possible for her? I have only moved once with her and she was much younger then.
We are moving about 30 miles away, not too far.

  1. how far are you moving

  2. She should be ok. My parents took 8 cats from North Carolina to Massachusetts. 2 were older than 16 and did fine. Make sure she’s in a secure carrier with a towel. Give her some food and water and a litter box if it’s a long trip.
Cats don’t really like change as I understand. I would try to make a spot for her with stuff she’s familiar with that you can lay out for her. She should be ok.

get some facial phermone like Feilaway plug it in near his favorite spot the day before the move. use a sturdy moving crate. when you get in, set him up in your room with his litter box as far away from his food and water as you can get it. plug the phermone back in. let him settle into that room for two weeks befor you have him explore the rest of the house. that gives him a safe spot, his territory and builds his comfort/confidence level. best of luck.

  4. When you are packing make sure her toys are included visibly in the pile by the door so she knows she is going too. When you get to the new place keep an eye on her and make sure she doesn’t get out as she will get lost. You may want to put her in one room for a day then gradually expand her territory to the whole apt. keep a lead on her when you travel or keep her safe in a box. Other than that…shouldn’t be a big deal. Cats just want to hang out with their buddies…ie you. home is where you are.

my cat was about 14 when i moved, i found her a quiet part of the place and put her there with her favourite bed and toys, i also made quite alot of fuss of her, to let her know i was around.
might be best to keep her in one of the rooms of the new place until everything is moved in and its quiet!
good luck with your moving, and hope your cat settles in lk! :)
