A moving company for three miles might be more than you’d think. Especially if they roll up with one of those huge trucks. Try looking into local, privately-owned moving companies. Two Men and a Truck, for instance, usually have smaller crews for much more reasonable rates. Also, you could consider hiring college students to help you and rent a Uhaul. That way, you might be able to save more money.
My biggest suggestion is to find local help and shop around. There are all sorts of ways to charge–mileage, tillage, etc, and some places will be much less than others.
