How does one go about moving across country?

moving
Chelsea R.

I live in Pennsylvania and am planning to move to Los Angeles, California in June. Does anyone have any tips for finding apartments, jobs, and moving my stuff? Any help would be greatly appreciated since all of my ideas have resulted in dead ends.

  1. there are moving companies that move your stuff. LA is really expensive. if you’re trying to find an apartment in downtown LA, GOOD LUCK! its going to be really hard for you to move around if you don’t have a car. Los Angeles is really spaced out and you can’t take the bus everywhere

  2. First and most important step is to find a job. You will most likely want to live in a suburb of L.A. If you have a profession, you should seek a job before moving so you can narrow your housing search to that area. You may need to make a scouting trip a month or so before you move. Do you have friends or family there who can help you, or with whom you could stay temporarily? If you do not have a profession, you will need plenty of money saved up to live on while you look for a job. In this case, pick a suburb, find a small furnished apt. and then look for a job near that location. Maybe one of the sites below will be of help to you.

  3. looking for a job in LA is just like looking for a job anywhere elese. It is best to have a least someone to stay with while you find one. THen you can find an apartment you can afford. The job is the thing.

  4. You need a job or at least saving for 6 months before moving, it is tough to get a job now and the 1 bedroom apartment costs $1000 per month in so so area.

Moving your stuff? unless the company will pay for relocating, forget it, I throw away most of my staff and pack most valuable belongs in one car, and start new life.

  5. i moved out here a few years back from tennessee, so i’ve been there, done that! i think that i did it the best way i could have, considering cost efficiency and time. i would look on craigslit for a temporary living situation, a place you can stay til you find a place you like. it’s a bad idea to set something like that up before you get here, cuz sometimes photos of an apartment can be very deceiving (esp. out here). find either a hotel that does weekly rates, or someone who is looking to sublet their apartment or room for a month or so… or even a place with the potential to continue living if you would be interested in roommates and you actually like the living arrangement right away.
if you know you’re gonna want a roommate, i’d check out roommates.com. that’s how i found my current roommate before i even moved out here… and it has definitely worked out cuz i’m still here 3 years later!! :-)
when actually packing and moving? i would only pack what fits in your vehicle to drive out here. you will save the hauling fees, and there are plenty of places that are either already furnished, or places where you can buy decent furniture for reasonable prices. or, like myself, i have a roommate who is originally from this area, so she had most of the furniture already, which was helpful… again, depends on what you prefer.
jobs? again, craigslist is always a good option. also, websites like monster.com may be helpful as well. it definitely depends on what field you are in.
i hope this info somewhat helps. good luck relocating!!
