What trouble, if any, will I run into at the Canadian border moving household furniture into the states?

Moving vans

I am moving from Ontario back into the states. I will have a moving van filled with my personal furniture. Will I run into any trouble at the Canadian border? Will they have to search the truck before letting me proceed?

  1. You must be able to tell them what is in the truck in detail. Items can be taken there if they are old, but if brand new you may have to pay duty fees. You will also need to be able to provide an address you are going to permanently.
There is no way to absolutely guarantee they won’t search the truck, just like any other time you cross the border. Professional moving companies have documents to get items across, but as a person you have to follow the same rules as if you were going there for any reason (vacation, business etc…)

  2. I think that if you have any trouble, it will be entering the US, not leaving Canada. It’s US customs who will have questions for you.
