What are the guidelines for deducting moving expenses when you move out of state to take a new job?
Doodie
I want to know if I can deduct fuel expenses, lodging for 2 nights, Budget moving van cost, temporary lodging expenses, etc….. since I moved to Louisiana from California to take a new job. We have since purchased a home here and plan to stay in Louisiana.

First, the new job has to be more than 50 miles further from your old house than your old job was. So you have this one down. If you moved to Louisiana from California, you most likely have this one covered.
You don’t deduct the fuel expenses, but you get an amount per mile (14 cents, I believe it is) to cover fuel. The two nights loding would have to be in the federal per diem for the area covered (so if you paid $5,000 for a night at the MGM Grand, you’re out of luck). The moving van cost you can take directly.
As for temporary lodging expenses, you can’t take those. But if you paid to store items, you can deduct 1 month of storage before you left and 1 month of storage after you got there.
