My hubby and I have a drink maybe 4x per YEAR, and I am pregnant, so it is obvious we won’t be drinking during the move.
Just wondering…do I need to just tape the heck out of the box, to prove that nobody is taking swigs in the moving van? lol.
Yeah, Mike L, that’s me, worry wart. Truly defines me. That’s why I am asking. I’m not offended though.

I would suggest putting it in the back of the moving truck and wrap the bottles up very well, so they don’t break and then put it in a safe spot so they won’t break.
And I honestly don’t see them going through all of your boxes(or even one).

it’s only illegal to have open containers in the cab, not in storage area, or even the trunk of a car…
If you do get pulled over and they go through the boxes it should be apparent that nobody had been drinking. They might have Probable Cause to get whoever is driving to take a breathalyser or field sobriety test but they can not arrest you for having a half-empty bottle of liquor because they do not know when or how the bottle was emptied.
In most states it can be moved opened if it is in the trunk or in the back of the truck out of the driver’s reach. Boxing it up and putting the packing tape on the boxes and having it in the back with all your other stuff would be an obvious sign of intent. But, to be really really safe you could call the police department between your old house and your new one and ask them what is the legal way to transport opened booze that is going from one place ot the other. It would not be the first time they were asked.
OK, here’s what I’d do. Don’t over tape it. That would look suspicious, unless you mark it with a Sharpie saying “Fine china FRAGILE”, or “Glassware FRAGILE”. And don’t put the box in the far back of the van (towards the cab). That’s the first place the cops will head to. But chances are nothing will happen, if they find it you might get breathalyzed and it’ll show that you haven’t been drinking, it’s not in an accessible spot, and the worst thing is they might confiscate it. I doubt they’d give you “open container”. Good luck!
Just move and don’t worry about it. Most policemen would understand your moving and not drinking. If by chance one did try to harass you by calling for a blood or breath test. Ask for his supervisor to be called and present for the test. Then ask that a written report be filed so that you may obtain a copy.
For your reason and just so the bottle don’t leak, you should just duct tape the tops of them…easy enough and then it is more than obvious that you have re-sealed them as best you can…
It is fine. Just box them up and tape it shut. There won’t be an issue.
My father was a police officer for many years, he said that if you ever have cause to transport open containers of alcohol, place them into personal luggage, the police require a warrant to search personal luggage. This is importnat when you have vehicles without trunks, such as station wagons, minivans and vans where a person (passenger)could access the alcohol while the vehicle is in motion, there’s nothing about whether it’s in the drivers reach or not, if alcohol cannot be stored in a locked trunk.
I would pick up a couple of those cardboard wine boxes from a liquor store, the ones with all the compartments- your bottles will stay upright that way.
Just tape the box or boxes well.
If pulled over you can explain the situation , but are they going thru all of your boxes. No….don’t worry and congrats with the new one.
