Is there anybody out there in Y!A land that has made a long distance move without a job secured first?

long distance move
my brain hurts

How did you go about it? Will anyone rent to you? Or do you have to get lucky and find someone that doesn’t want references? And if not, can you even get a job if you’re living out of a motel or something.
We’ve just about given up on trying to make ends meet up here in the Northeast US, and we’re interested in making a fresh start in a new state. But then I don’t want to be living out of the car for any extended period of time either.

Yeah, I moved 700 miles away without a job. I flew down there first & just happened to find some place for rent as I was driving around. I used my current employer - I guess he just assumed I was relocating for work.
It’s NOT easy to find a job on the fly, unless you’re wanting to work in the restaurant industry. I wouldn’t recommend it - find a job FIRST.

  2. No - I moved with the company I was working for. It was still a pain doing everything remotely.

Plenty of places that will rent to you if you just have cash, even on a weekly basis. Scrounge thru the web for local classifieds that list the cheap places to live. You can live there until you can get a permanent job and move into someplace better.

It can be tough at times. The job market sucks everywhere.

  3. I did. I moved because I wanted to go home. I had a good job, What do I say I had an excellent job but I was homesick.
I moved from NZ to the Netherlands but I knew that with my skills it would be easy to find a job.
had agreed to move back to my parents so I had a roof over my head whilst i was looking for a job. I had enough cash saved up to last me 4 months.

It was scary but I knew it I could not continue with the homesickness. I succeeded big time. It was the right move for me

  4. We did it some 17 years ago. Moved from Florida to Minnesota. We were fortunate in that we had friends that let us live with them until we could find housing. Us meaning my husband, myself and our daughter. We packed what we would need into the little sentra we had and drove up.

What you might consider is making contact with family or friends in another state to have some place to go and live temporarily. If you have to put most of your things in storage until you can arrange to move them or have them shipped. Only bring what you absolutely have to have.

You really haven’t provided enough information for us to help much further, but if you have any questions, email me.

    Best of Luck!

  5. Yes, I did 25 years ago. Left NYC and moved to GA without a job. I found an apt to rent and then went out and hustled for a job. Have your resume ready to go. Talk to friends and family to find warm spheres of influence friends contacts for your job search. Use online searches too. Have about 6 months of savings to fall back on. It was the best thing I ever did but you need to be confident in your own abilites and a risk taker.
    Good luck!

  6. We did it about 7 years ago. We had housing squared away, but no job prospects. We had some savings to rely on until I found a job.

I don’t think you will have a problem finding housing, people pull up stakes and try something new all the time. You’ll be fine, even if you have to get a studio in a hotel. Extended Stay Hotels are always nice.

    Good luck!
